how do you get a line to go in both x and y direction.

Maybe what you're asking is, how do I CONSTRAIN my lines so that they are parallel to the X or Y. Or put another way, how do I make my lines perfectly horizontal or vertical.
In using the line tool, you first click to set the start of a line, and then you move the cursor horizontally or vertically until you see the constraint symbol for either the horizontal or vertical, then click while the appropriate constraint is showing
I hope this will solve your issue as it did for me when I was developing sketch for estafeta rastreo v1
