Top-level configuration

I'm currently trying to implement the configure option into our work, which works pretty well, but I was wondering if it's possible to change configurations of subassemblies easier, while remaining in the top-level assembly? Right now, you can have a configuration in the top-level assembly, which would appear above the instance list. But if you want to change configurations on subassemblies, you'd have to right-click that subassembly and then change configuration in a separate window.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's hard to do, but it is hard to keep track of which configurations you're using without having an overview of all configurations within the top-level assembly. Also, sometimes you have configurations in different levels corresponding to each other, which kind of makes it necessary to have those configurations in a single list.
It would be nice to have like a tab or something similar with all the different configurations that are within the top-level assembly, where you can choose all of the created options.
Is there already a similar way available for this, and if not, am I missing the reason why it couldn't be done in the first place? I can't imagine it has something to do with versions or anything, as it's still possible to change configurations as of this moment, without any updating.
