Update Linked Document Confusion

It seems like when I click the blue circle with the arrow, linked documents just start creating new versions of themselves infinity and nothing gets resolved. What am I doing wrong? I have five assemblies from other documents that are in one assembly in a different document I whenever I click the blue circle, nothing gets updated and new versions just keeping getting made. Now, I have 50 other versions of the assembly documents that have zero changes. For organization sakes, it would be nice to delete them.
