Over Define Assembly when simulating a piston

I'm designing a box that has a gas piston on the side.
I have the top of the box connected to the bottom with a simple revolute mate acting like a hinge. I designed the gas piston with a slider mate.
When I attach the top of the piston to the lid with a revolute mate, there's no issue, but when I connect the other end to the bottom half of the box, I get the over defined error.
I tried swapping all of the revolute mates out for cylindrical mates, and that didn't help.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
