Need Help with Scaling Assemblies in Onshape - Emmanuel Katto Uganda

emmanuel_kattoemmanuel_katto Member Posts: 4

Hi Onshape Community,

I am Emmanuel Katto. I’m currently working on a project involving multiple assemblies in Onshape, and I’m facing some challenges with scaling components within those assemblies.

  1. Scaling Components: Is there a way to uniformly scale components while maintaining their relationships within the assembly? I want to scale a sub-assembly without breaking any constraints or interactions.
  2. Part Studio vs. Assembly: When I scale a part in the Part Studio, does it automatically update in the assembly? Or do I need to make adjustments in the assembly after scaling the part?
  3. Best Practices: Are there any best practices for managing assemblies that require scaling, especially when collaborating with others who might not have the same setup?

Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your help!

Best,

Emmanuel Katto

    1. If you have parts controlled by a variable studio for scaling you could edit their parameters from the assembly in the ride side pane to mimic scaling. You could use configurations with your parts and drive them from an assembly. Onshape assemblies do not have any part editing capabilities at this time. The mates are robust and should scale with part changes just fine, it might depend on your expectations.
    2. Part updates in assemblies are instant as long as they reference the main workspace and all are in the same document. If the parts are set to a version or are inserted from another document, they will not change without a new version and reference update.
    3. In generic terms, creating a variable for scale factor and designing your parts with reference to that should do the trick.
