Rendering: Section Views

martin_kopplowmartin_kopplow Member Posts: 504 PRO

I just had the bold idea of rendering a section view of a small assembly. I kind of expected it to work like it works in drawings: Set section plane(s), click 'capped section' and check non-sectioned parts in the 'exclude from section' list and then go on rendering as usual.

It does not work at all. Rendering isn't even available (button inactive) while a section view is active (so what are section views in render studios good for?), and in the preview, capping works arbitrary at most. Default cap appearance does work for some parts, not for others, assigned material works fo no caps at all, and some parts are missing some faces elsewhere.

Am I missing something here, or did I just run into a vast construction site?

RenderStudio can do sections, but not the same as regular Onshape. This definitely seems like a shortcoming. Many of the major issues have been/are being addressed, but there are many places where it's a bit rough around the edges.

Hmmmmm … I can not get it to render sections, not even of the simplest of objects:

With an object as simple as this one, it at least makes the "Render now" button active, but that's it. IMO it cannot currently render sections.

While we're at it: Why would I want to have two options of cap colours? If there is a default cap colour, then that's probably the one to use if nothing else is specified. I could change it, should need be, to another colour. Fine. But now, I have an option to override all default or user defined coloured caps once again. What sense does that make? The only option I need is: "Use assigned part material for caps" vs. "Use cap colour override" with an edit dialog.

This should be looked into by the developers.

Sections do work, so if there are cases you are finding please log a support ticket.

The reason for cap color override is when you have > 1 section.

@GregBrown Okay, it gets logical when more section planes come into play. I only tried one so far. Regarding the samples: I seem to only have samples that don't work.

Here's a sample sample within an object I posted earlier
