string variable in circular pattern

I am trying to draw a clockface which requires creating the numbers 1 to 12 in a circular pattern.
I have crated a variable as count = 0 and created a second variable as count = #count + 1.
I have drawn a number in a sketch and assigned it the expression toString(#count), then extruded it.
I have created a circular feature pattern and included the #count, extrude and the sketch of the number in features to pattern. The pattern is set to 12 instances over 360 deg. Reapply features is ticked.
The circular pattern is drawn in the model, however, the text is NOT updated. ie only 1's are produced.
If anyone has any ideas why the text variable is not updated I would be very grateful.
