Beginner needing some help

ilona_brownilona_brown Member Posts: 2

Hey guys!

I am attempting to create a drawer system build for our 4wd. Our aim is to flat pack and export my designs to be laser cut into 3mm aluminium sheet, bent into shape and welded together. We plan to purchase runners probably the Dunn and Watson base mount drawer slides.

I am a bit confused as to whether I should be using the "sheet metal model" or "laser join" features. Have a look to see if what I designed already will help explain it better visually. Any advice would be great! Also please be patient, I'm relatively new at this 😁

    Hey @ilona_brown,

I think as you are only designing flat parts for the parts with the laser joints and not actually any parts that have bends, you are probably better of working the way you are doing it. This custom feature is not allowed for active sheet metal models.

If you are also needing these type of joints in bent parts you can design your parts with a sharp internal corner, use the laser joint feature and then afterwards use the sheet metal model feature (thicken option) to turn them into a sheet and to get your flat pattern.

    Hope this helps. Cheers
