What causes Onshape to sometimes switch to the "Main" workspace when opening?

eric_pestyeric_pesty Member Posts: 1,790 PRO

On some documents we are working on, when opening the doc we sometimes end up in the "Main" workspace, which hasn't been updated in a couple months and we get a mini heart attack!
Most of the time it just opens in the last workspace I was in but it occasionally reverts to main and I can't tell what causes it…

Obviously not a big issue as it's easy enough to switch to the correct workspace but it's still a waste of time a mostly I feel like I "NEED" to know why this happens!

Any one else getting this and figured out a "pattern" for this? Or maybe one of the Devs can chime in?

The first question I would ask is why is "Main" not representative of your current plan of record?

I think it happens if you open from the documents browser - it defaults to Main. If you open from a link, or reload an open tab in your browser, the workspace is embedded in that URL, and that might be whatever branch you've been working in.

I like to keep the Main workspace to be the most important and typical one, just for this kind of reason. With workspace protection and all the improvements to branching and merging, perhaps this should be a goal?

We are working in branch called "Dev" and We'll merge to Main once we release the product.

Also if you use workspace protection on main then the Main will rarely be the most up to date (for a project in active development)...

I'll investigate but I don't open from links... Maybe a difference is opening from "recent" vs navigating to the folders...

I have the same thing happen. I'll be in a new branch for a month on a document making changes. When re-opening the document the next day to continue my work, sometimes it opens in the branch I was just in, sometimes it opens in Main. I can't figure out the pattern.

Hmmm. I wonder if it could have anything to do with the updates every ~3 weeks?

I too wonder this often. It seems so random to me. I often find my self playing guessing games about where I will end up during the few seconds spent watching the spinning circle. 🤨

Thanks for the input, glad to know it's not just me…
So it seems like the pattern is still a mystery!
