Creating planes perpendicular but off angle

MDesignMDesign Member Posts: 47 ✭✭

So this project of converting this mesh to solid has been quite the learning process and I keep thinking there's got to be a better way than I'm doing it which is and excessive amount of planes/sketches/constraints/faces. I haven't found another way or another software yet. Ideally a mesh editor that lets me define mesh planes and complex surfaces with splines referencing the mesh but not 'glued' to it….would be ideal. but I haven't found that solution yet.

So my question comes as how do I create a plane perpendicular to another plane. line and angle doesn't work as it seems the 0 angle is arbitrary in my case. but essentially the plan I want to create is perpendicular to the planes under my red arrow. that edge of the mesh is on angle from the top view and is not parallel to the edges of the planes under the red arrow. Ultimately I want to create a surface to follow the mesh but smooth for the most part. and I want that front edge at the arrow to be tangent to a perpendicular plane off those planes below the arrow. Does any of this make sense? kinda hard to explain.

I tried sketching a line on the plane I want be perpendicular to and using line/angle but the angle relative to the sketched line plane is unknown.

There's an incredibly useful custom feature called Create Euler plane which is in this doc:

Probably worth trying it out for your case…

That is an interesting tool but it doesn't seem to allow me to define the rotations in relation to a anything.

Hey Justin. Have you tried using mate connectors in lieu of planes? You may find their flexibility useful. - Scotty

Nope. not sure what you mean. can you point me in the right direction on what to learn?

One function of a mate connector is that it can be used as a plane. It is super versatile in both placement and orientation.

Interesting. tried it out. saves defining 2 points for 3 point plane but spend more time lining it up. thank you for pointing that out. might come in handy when I least expect it.

Completed model for anyone interested. lotta faces and fillets. To get the perpendicular plane I was looking for I just created a series of axis lines sketches and additional planes at 90 deg from each other till I got what I needed. just thought it should be easier to use an edge or 3d spline to do it.
