Newbie with issues around "Shell"

I have a simple object and would like to "shall" out the underside but it is giving me a weird result. did I extrude in the wrong direction or pick the wrong plane?

You're likely to fare better if you do the shell before the text. Text is very fine geometry, which shell doesn't like.
