Tangent mate animation drags but won't animate

So, this magenta follower has a vertex to surface tangent mate with an 8-pointed snail cam. Works great when I drag it, otherwise attempts to animate will kick a:

"Unable to compute any steps for this animation. Unable to apply transform. Instance(s) may be constrained." error

…Which I have grown very used to seeing. @cody_armstrong , hope all is well and I wonder if you are the guy to shine a light on this?

I have had some success with basically the same approach, and it eventually fails (which prompts me to open the last version known to animate when I'm showing someone around the design).

Here's one that works, but only on certain versions:

And on this one, if I animate one higher up in the chain of gear mates, it fails, but animating the shark fin cam, it is happy, but only in this version.

Ach, answered my own question. It was a case of more than one part fixed in the assembly. Rookie error! I still don't understand why that makes so much mischief!
