How to surface model a rifle grip (trying to learn more about surface modelling)

Hi all!

I'm trying to learn how to properly model a rifle grip.

I'm currently following the idea as detailed here:

If you open the doc (see version: Ask Q in Forum2 [the latest one, there are 2 versions with this name]) you'll see at the end I've defined 8 planes for 8 profiles. It … works, but the curves aren't particularly smooth, and the resulting surface shows ceases around where the thumb meets the hand (CMC joint).

My questions are:

  1. for something like this, am I using the right approach? Should be go about this another way?
  2. should I break down something like this into multiple parts? if so, what kind approach would be good?

Part of my problem is that I don't have front and side profiles that I can sketch from, I've got a handful of images is all. It's also has a lot of bumps and different depths all over it, so I'm not sure if lofting is the way to go.

The model is at:

Any tips appreciated, so I can get better!
