Measuring along edges

Hi,
Referencing the image below:
I have flat parts consisting of multiple edges which may be comprised of lines, arcs and splines.
From a given point on one of those edges I need to be able to set another point at a given distance along the adjacent edge(s) from that initial point. Therefore the measurement may have to take into account 1 to n edges.
So taking the image as an example how would I measure from one of the points to set the other at a given distance?
Any help appreciated.
