Imported part - can't select plane for Sketch, or merge parts

konnor_jeankonnor_jean Member Posts: 9

I imported this part into Onshape and started modifying it. However, I encountered two issues so far:

1. I cannot select any plane of the object itself as a base for sketch. I can only select the cardinal planes XYZ.

2. Object consists of many parts, and when I try to Bolean-merge them I cannot. One part is red for some reason.

How can I solve those issues?

It would be much better if you could import something other than a mesh. It's possible to work with mesh parts (OBJ, STL, 3MF) but it's much easier to work with STEP, Parasolid, Rhino, or IGES (all NURBs CAD formats).

try using the Mate connector icon and then create a mate connector on the fly that has the origin on one of your imported mesh vertices…

You can further control the primary direction of the mate connector (i.e. Z axis) if need be.

I'm not quite sure what you meant but selecting that Mate Connector does not allow me to then click on any face of the body/mesh.
I think the shortest way to achieve that is to convert the imported thing into a solid body, but I don't know how.

doesn't look like a step import. do you know what program created the step file? Can you share the document link?

Use the stl as a visual guide and redraw it natively. Stl files are simply useless unless they are in the slicer software of your printer.

It is a mesh. Is it from Rhino? Then, even a STEP won't help, for Rhino can't make proper planar faces, so better avoid importing. You'll need to recreate it to work with, anyway.

You can find source files here. I am pretty sure I imported the f3d, not stl.

Correction: this is the link. 3mf import.

3mf files are not stp files so that is your issue for selecting planes. As far as many parts question. You have to select combine parts in the import dialog

FYI, there is a gridfinity fs someone made in OS. It works well, I used it for a few bins.

I downloaded the original fusion files (including where the files you found were "remixed from"), opened in fusion, and they are clean there. From there, exported as step, and imported into a pubic OS document. You can make a copy of my OS document, and then direct edit the files in OS. Or, you can stay in fusion and have access to the feature tree there. It's good to have all the available free cad packages just for opening files when needed.

I think you imported the stl or the 3mf. OS does not convert native fusion files. They must be converted to step first from within fusion. Notice how your files are all tessellated and the OS link I shared in the post above are all smooth,
