Size a cut hole for a sphere

I'm trying to size the hole to cut in a 10mm flat bar to mate a solid sphere so that the sphere 'pole' intersects with the underside plane of the flat bar. I'm trying this by trial and error but was hoping to use assembly to constrain the sphere. So I created a cylindrical mate and then added a tangent mate that seems to have worked too (make sure you have fully constrained sketches or you get 'mate is not consistent' error on the tangent mate)..

Or is this the wrong approach since I still haven't solved for tangent to the under side plane intersection. .The hole diameter should be about 70mm I imagine.

Suddenly realised that I can do this in a sketch. - see sketch3 - the answer is 67.8mm.

But if it was a more complicated series of parts is the first method still doable?

Thanks

Hello David. If I understand your description, you are trying to find out what size hole is needed for the ball to rest in the hole while the bottom of the ball is on the same plane as the bottom of the plate You found that. Beyond that, are you trying to use mates to have the ball rotate in any direction? If so, perhaps the method in the attached document might be of help. - Scotty

P.S. The hole's purpose is to show the ball rotation.
