How do assembly configurations work

I am designing a configurable lift for an frc robot and I need to have it in an assembly but still be able to edit the configurations of the parts when editing the assembly configuration. I know I can add a new config variable in the assembly then set the inserted parts configuration to that new variable but it feels clunky and unnecessary after seeing it done more simply in other peoples assemblies. They use usages (as seen in picture) but I can't figure out how to do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated
