How to add usages in configuration

I've seen other people have usages in their assemblies but I can't figure out how to use a parts configuration in an assembly configuration, any help would be appreciated.

create an assembly configuration, hit "+ Configure assembly features" double click on a configurable part in your assembly, select the configuration parameter that you'd want to configure in the assembly (they'll get a yellow dotted box).
