Best way to "sandbox" an app for trial

We want to trial a couple PLM options and I am wondering what strategies can be used to make sure "real" data isn't affected during the trial…
Obviously I can create a specific folder and document(s) to play around with but it seems like once the app is installed it will be available across all my documents and it will "see" all my docs so it will be up to me to make sure I don't affect things I didn't intend to but it seems to be impossible to separate things like standard content for example…
Any tips/thoughts on how to handle this?
