Hole Tool: m8 thread in 6.8mm bore
Hi all,
I have a question regarding threading in a hole with correct bore size for the thread diameter.
The problem I am facing: I want to create a thread in the front side of an aluminium extrusion profile (sketch is derrived from the manufacturer).
The hole diameter of of the profile is 6.8mm which is the correct bore size for an m8 thread. Applying the hole tool, an error is thrown:
"None of the holes intersected a part"

With these type of extrusion profiles creating an thread in the front for a butt joint is the most common application.
Is there a way around this, without chanching the profile by hand?
Best

Have you tried reversing the direction of the hole operation?
The hole feature makes the hole, so if you have already extrude removed the hole it will also fail. (It's a little hard to tell from the screen shot if it's just a sketched circle or a hole behind the red :) )
The problem is not the direction of the thread, I rotated the part to make the problem visible.
The problem is, that a thread in a already existing hole with a diameter of the bore leads to an error.
Creating an part with 6.7mm bore this works.
So is this solved? Use the hole tool to make the hole, not put a thread on an existing hole.
As I said before. I am using a the (sketch) profile of an Item 40x40L aluminium extrusion in my frames. Since the profile has a "bore" of 6.8 mm, I would need to alter the sketch for the thread tool to work. This is not an Ideal solution, since it alteres the correct size.
I see the issue, but this is not the concept of the hole tool: It is by definition a hole tool, not a tap tool. (There are dedicated thread FS out there)
Instead of altering the sketch (thereby creating wrong geometry, which is not desirable), just delete the hole, then use the hole tool to create the threaded hole with the accurate bore diameter in one go. That will also make your design more robust to downsteam changes. (Else, what would your thread feature do after someone changes the hole diameter in the sketch?)
This custom feature might be useful to annotate existing cylindrical face with hole attributes.
In the past I've moved the existing extrusion hole in a few thousands to make it smaller. Move face & offset in towards the center. This should allow the hole tool to work.
