Unable to transform a sketch on the front plane.

I don't seem to be able to transform a sketch on the front plane. If I define a 2-pont rectangle as a sketch, then try to transform the sketch OnShape complains I haven't selected any entities. My rectangle remains all greyed out and i cannot select any entities. if i extrude it first then I can rotate it. Am I doing something wrong?

You can transform within sketcher, or you can transform curves, surfaces or solids in part mode, but you can't transform sketches in part mode.
