How to design slots of different sizes/depths/widths in solid piece?

FFCP2 Tool Holder | Part Studio 1

I'm trying to 'simplify' the design of a tool holder for my 3D printer setup. It's just a tilted block of plastic with slots for a spatula, a pair of needle-nosed pliers, and a side-cutter. The attached photo shows the original design, but I want to redesign it so the block is tilted up about 20deg, and I want to remove the central raised portion. Since all three slots have different widths, depths and thicknesses, I came up with a multiple plane design to accommodate this. I first created the sketch & extrusion for the spatula, and this worked OK. However, when I created the sketch/extrusion for the pliers with just the plier cutout in the sketch, the extrusion overwrote the spatula slot where the two overlapped. So, I added the spatula cutout to the pliers sketch, thinking that would solve the problem, but not only did it NOT solve the problem, it created a weird result.

Clearly I'm going about this all wrong, despite my innate creativity and brilliance πŸ˜‰. Any help would be appreciated.

TIA,

Frank
