Can't create documents or folders in my own Team

joshtargojoshtargo Member Posts: 324 EDU

I made a Team for our group, the Quadrangles. there is a subfolder in it called Quadrangles, but this is an extra step every time we navigate to our team documents. I want to be able to put documents and folders there, but I can't make documents or folders here, even though I own the team. Other students have put files there, but I can't!. I never get the option to navigate to the Team when creating a document or folder.

what's going on?

    Two clarifications/questions:

    1. Teams are collections of users. You can't really create a folder inside a team. You can share a folder with a team which is just a shortcut for sharing a folder with a collection of users.
    2. If you click the blue Create button and select Document, you can't browse to Owned by me and then the Quadrangles folder?

I can go to the Team > Quadrangles folder, but how can I create Documents (or folders) directly in the Team, where my students were able to?

When you click a team from the menu on the left, folders will show up in the main interface area on the right, which kind of makes it look like you're navigating into a subfolder, like Team > Quadrangles. But really, clicking the team is just showing folders shared with that team. You can share a folder with mutilple teams. It might seem like semantics, but I think it's important to understand precicely what's going on.

Similarly, you cannot create Documents inside a team, but you can certainly share documents with a team. It sounds like what you want to do is put documents in the folder that is shared with the team, which will consequently share those documents with everyone on the team. To do so, you should be able to click Create, select document, then browse to Owned by me and then select the Quadrangles folder.

Another way of saying it… Teams don't/can't own anything. In your case, RoboBoosters is one potential owner of documents and or folders and so is your user (Owned by me is visible telling you that you have documents you own). Owners of documents/folders can share those items to teams and then those teams can interact with them. Each team member can also share their documents/folders to the Team and they show under that team as well. This makes it clear to users and organizations that they actually do own what's been shared to Teams. If not done this way, ownership of data can be too murky - which is important to avoid. The owned by column is helpful in understanding that.

the main purpose of this inquiry is to "explode" that quadrangles folder so that the team members can access the subfolders directly after clicking on the quadrangles team name, without needing to always click on the quadrangles folder after that.

i moved the subfolders (out of the quadrangles folder) to "owned by me" and then shared each one with the team. is this the process or am i missing an easier way?
