How to Prevent Collision Between Puzzle Tiles in a Sliding Puzzle Assembly?

Hi everyone,

(newbie here) I'm working on a 3x3 sliding puzzle assembly in Onshape, and I want to make sure that the puzzle tiles don't overlap or collide during movement. Here’s my setup:

  1. The tiles are inserted into a frame (base puzzle) in an assembly.
  2. I've already added planar mates to fix the tiles within the frame.

What is the best way to:

  • Restrict the movement of tiles so they don't overlap with one another?

Attached is a screenshot of my current assembly for reference. Any tips or advice would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

It looks as though you've only mated to the bottom surfaces. you will need to assign more planer mates to restrict side to side movement. Or use another mate type altogether. I'd suggest a simple fastened mate to restrict movement in all directions. That way you don't need to assign as many mates using planer mate. Not sure if it is practicable with the number of parts you have, but you could give their bottom faces a planar mate with a limit to zero on one axis. With more parts, this would obviously get pretty confusing pretty soon. If the tangent mate had a min/max limit option for the distance, that'd help a lot (and not only in this case!)
