Part disappears when editing - Kirby nozzle.

Hi All,

Forgive me if this topic has been covered elsewhere and I just wasn't able to find it. I am new to Onshape and this is my first post to this forum.

The project I am working on is to model an old Kirby vacuum hand nozzle.
https://cad.onshape.com/documents/4017de7673e9faa36bd6e925/w/820687bc241649a293cc9950/e/e1e3fe2215e24622f83e4621?renderMode=0&uiState=6796974f77a8bd3793833b86

My idea of how to make this shape is the intersection of two thin lofts, one extrusion, a sweep at the bottom, and a bunch of fillets. The first loft is for the tapered part that fits the hose. The second loft is for the end that is for the end that is wide at the floor and tapers up to the tube. And the extrusion is to patch the hole where these two intersect.

Since this is my first project using lofts I probably edited this model a thousand times over the days I worked on it. The problem is, when I now edit Sketch 20 to adjust the bead at the bottom of the model, the visualization now almost entirely goes away.

I have two guesses what's wrong:

The first is that there's a setting somewhere that turns off the visualization when the complexity of a form exceeds some preset number. If this is the case, is there a place I can turn up this number so I can finish my model?

My second guess is that during the course of my many edits the underlying database for the model has become corrupt. Is there a command to purge and repair the database so the model stays visible?  I have tried copying the workspace and deleting all the suppressed commands, but that didn’t solve the problem.

Maybe I broke something rearranging the commands? Maybe something else is wrong?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best, Phil

There are probably better ways to model this overall to achieve the actual shape, but the most basic issue that you're having is that your sketches are not fully defined. This can result in unexpected results where you think you have stuff tangent, horizontal or vertical and it's actually off by a tiny amount. I would suggest working on more simple models first before tackling something like this. I would also strongly recommend going through the learning center material.

Usually if any face or overall model shows as transparent when it wasn't set that way, it's indicative of a model which has geometry which is causing it to not be properly defined. Kinda like trying to divide by zero.

I wouldn't worry about the corruption until you sort out your sketches and make sure they really reflect your design intent. Something being off by a tiny fraction because it wasn't properly constrained can cause all kinds of downstream pain.

    Hi S1mon,

    I appreciate your reply.

Following your advice I will go through every sketch and make sure each line, curve, and point is fully defined. I will also go through the tutorial center material as you've suggested to learn what I'm certainly doing wrong. I can post again to this thread with the result.

My motivation to do this model wasn't the ease of the design, but that I needed the part to replace the cracked nozzle I have. This model 3D printed correctly and I've been able to use the part I've made in my house.

I look forward to hearing back with a better way to model this shape.

    Thanks, Phil
