Spline with 2 control points - dimensions but not fully defined?

one_offone_off Member Posts: 6

Hi, I am new to onshape (and CAD in general) and I've been trying over and over again to get a simple 2 control point spline curve to become "fully defined" (indicated by outline going from blue to black). I watched a video and did what I saw there and added dimensions to both of the control points…defined their length and angle to a construction line as well as distance between the ends. Yet the sketch still remains not "fully defined". Can anyone advise where I am going wrong?

You have nothing constraining the horizontal position of the spline.

Just for reference - I am creating a replacement battery cover and I can extrude the spline to make a surface and then thicken it to create the main body of the cover.

When you say I need to "constrain the horizontal position" I'm not sure what you mean? I have 27mm set between the ends, but these are not joined together with a line but just a construction line because it is not a closed shape. Or is there an actual "position" I need to be specifying somewhere? Am I going wrong in starting with the profile of the cover and extruding then thickening it to get the solid I am after?

    Sorry for not understanding.

I removed the horizontal construction line I had and added the 27mm end to end dimension directly to the spline, but still not fully defined…

Although the elements of your sketch are constrained to one another, the entire sketch is 'floating' on the sketch plain. It needs to be anchored. Create a constraint to the origin; a dimension to one of the end points of the spline will do. - Scotty

    Thanks,

Thanks, I set a dimension from the left end point of the spline to the origin point but it still says that the sketch isn't 'fully defined'. (The sketch sits coincident with the Top plane). I'm baffled why this isn't enough as with all these dimensions set the splice is locked in place and cannot be dragged or adjusted in any way?

It would look like the point on the right is not horizontal with the point on the left. It's still blue, meaning it is unconstrained in some direction.

these points are free to move in these directions.
