Add a spline to a tapered plug

robert_ikinrobert_ikin Member Posts: 4

This is so simple it's madding, I've created a tapered plug using revolve and now I need to add a spline to the curved surface, I thought I could extrude an arc on the curve and use the circular pattern to repeat around the plug, I created an extrude via a sketch on one end but I can't get the extrude to match the plug taper, is this the right approach or is there another way to do it?

Can you post a link to your document for review?

Without the document, it's hard to see what you're talking about. But, an extrude with a direction (highlighted in first image) would work. Or a revolved remove just a few degrees (20 degrees in the second picture).

Could I ask why the splines need to be on a "tapered" plug? You may have a valid reason for this, but I'm not making the connection of why you would need this. It is an interesting abstract problem though.

Thanks for the tips, I'm trying to produce a set of CAD drawings for the gears of an old (30+ years) automatic shed door setup. Long story short, the originals stripped late last year. I managed to produce some drawings, which I printed and tried, they were close enough so I produced a set of Nylon CF ones as a temporary measure, they're OK but not hard enough for a permanent fix. There are two gears, one I've got right, the other, the drive gear had a cut recessed tappered splined mounting which I can't get right, it's ok with nylon I can use the threaded drive shaft and force it to fit.

I want a set of steel ones made, thence the need for good CAD drawings, with the drive gear my idea was to create a plug with the tapper, spline and cut out and extrude through the drive gear, Good, bad I don't know this is all new to me.
