Part number released as Part cannot be released as Assembly
![David_Rauseo](https://profiles.onshape.com/4e257f9c0900d9d513a4c92600970182e6e00aaf5e905f280cda4267ee363027.png)
We have parts that are often reworked into assemblies, and we want to keep the same part number with a new revision.
When releasing the assembly, we get an error "Part Number XXXX was previously released as Part and cannot be released as Assembly". Is there a workaround for this? Obsoleting the previous revision does not work.

If you do need to "re-use" the part number, you can "reset" it in the company admin (under "revision tools"):
This is something that has come up for us when we assign a PN to sheet metal part and then need to revise it to add inserts, at which point it becomes an assembly…0

Is the assembly completely “form, fit and function” compatible replacement for the part? If not, just use a new part number. Part numbers are free.
Printed assembly documenation, BOMs, inventory management and retraining are not free.
If you create assembly documents with item numbers, then as long as the items look basically the same, you don’t need to rev them. Putting BOMs with part numbers (or, even worse, with revisions) on assembly drawings guarantee you'll be revising that drawing all the time. BOMs themselves do need to be revised, and I can see why inventory management may take a slight adjustment. However, if you can’t safely reach into a bin blind and grab something with the same part number (regardless of revision) then it shouldn't have the same part number.
