can anyone help me on this airfoil

TardisTardis Member Posts: 6

hi, im just trying to figure out how i can make this airfoil the same size but can follow a path, i want the bottom airfoil to follow the diagonal path but it causes the airfoil to shift, leading to it not being the same throughtout the whole area, in the end i had to resort to using extrude but this is not the design, any help pls?? thx

Can you post a link to your document?

no sure from your description what you're trying to accomplish. your loft seems to look quite close to the pictures you're trying to copy.

if you want to sweep a profile backwards, you can use an extrude with a direction.

you could also extrude it up to a a face if you want it to end parralel to the longitudinal direction of the airplane.

The thing with airfoils is they're usually considered to be parallel to the airflow/direction of flight. If you rotate them about the vertical axis, they'll not be the same airfoil any more, but a more or less arbitrarily thickened version of the airfoil as originaly computed. So, you should try to create a loft or extrude between two parallel profiles and then cut away the parts not needed. That'll also help with sheeting later.

the problem is that when i use loft to attempt to connect the two airofils from the center to the root, however because it is diffent, i cannt extrude remove sketch 2 onto the side, it will cause a non-manifold body.

try extruding removing the two traingles in sketch 2

I tried doing it one at a time and it still failed, but gives a clue about the issue.

just the top one looks like this, with a little sliver face (notice the highlighted face goes behind the sliver on the right side)

If you use Delete Face set to Heal after that it removes it and the second triangle cut works.

Or you can add more to the sketch geometry and extrude it all

Is that what you're after? Here's the link. https://cad.onshape.com/documents/794ffbe58f9d9a2471ddb6fe/w/54b562c8e2b47b7f7af6c3e4/e/be5157902b3e249af7e32c62

or you can create an intersection curve to use as the extrude direction like this. https://cad.onshape.com/documents/794ffbe58f9d9a2471ddb6fe/w/c358eeef2f3b89b22fa2d9d5/e/be5157902b3e249af7e32c62
