Cutting an assembly (walls and windows)

paul_ragotpaul_ragot Member Posts: 18 ✭✭✭

Hello,

I have an assembly of brick-like parts that make up a wall.

Is it possible to cut the assembly (wall) in order to have an opening for a window?

I can extrude in-context but I want to cut in this situation.

    Hey Paul. You say the wall is an assembly? All those brick like pieces are mated together? Please post a link to your document. - Scotty

    @paul_ragot,

    To the best of my knowledge, features like <extrude><remove> can only be made in the PartStudio environment, not in an AssemblyStudio. This is unfortunate, as assembly cuts (e.g. post-assembly machining) common in many applications; and other CAD packages offer this functionality.

    I can't speak to how difficult it would be to code this functionality into Onshape. But an approach to consider might be extend the functionality of <Derived Part> such that an assembly could be derived into a new PartStudio for additional featuring (Extrude-Remove, etc). The attached screenshot shows that Derive is currently limited to Parts. Sure would be nice if we could create a part in PartStudio1, insert that part into assembly, derive that assembly into PartStudio2 … and then add features such as extrude-remove. There may well be legitimate reasons why this would be difficult or infeasible to implement.

    I am curious too - Sometimes I will have an assembly I would like to add Features to (Holes, Chamfers et) after the assembly is created..

    Not sure if this helps in your case, but since the walls is a rigid thing in itself, one might look at it as a Composite Part. In the following example, there is only one brick object, patterned, then composited and the window booled off ...

    Hello all,

    The wall is an assembly of 2 different parts: corner pieces and 'bricks'. So not a part pattern.

    So I guess deriving an assembly may not work here.

    I think this is a situation (pointed out earlier in this discussion) where OnShape needs to add this functionality.

    Maybe development has an answer?

    Thanks to all who answered!

    Paul
