Whatisit with 3Dfindit?

There is this plugin in the app store, and I have tried it long ago, didn't work, so I try now and then, but it still doesn't. I get this:

It basically says ""Export failed" and then it has this link:

https://3dfindit.freshdesk.com/de/support/solutions/articles/103000269048-plugin-3dfindit

Which takes me to their help page, and throws some sand in my eyes by asking for a PLM system present on my PC (isn't) and making me believe I should download and install a plugin on my computer:

That plugin is for locally installed PLM/CAD, though, and wants to install gigabytes of useless stuff. Only after searching a bit deeper, there is one more link on that page, referring to onshape:

https://3dfindit.freshdesk.com/de/support/solutions/articles/103000312969-plugin-3dfindit-mit-onshape

There, it kind of says it should work exactly as I expected, which it obviously dosen't. I'm stuck. Has anybody here ever seen it working?

Any hint on what to do to make it work?

I use it frequently. Sometimes, it works, and sometimes, it doesn't.

I thought the issue might be with different suppliers and how something was set up on the backend, but I don't know. I have never been able to figure out a rhyme or reason. I think I submitted a ticket or two to the help desk already but never got a satisfactory answer.

I wish they could make it work flawlessly and get more American companies on board. When it works, it is excellent, and the amount of information available is mind-boggling. It is the best 3D parts hosting platform I know of at the moment.

When it doesn't work, I fall back on the website and download/upload.

Yes, downloading from the website is what I do, too. I played around with the app again, this afternoon. Suddenly, instead of running in the sidebar (as I knew it), it popped up in it's own tab all over the screen and I could actually select and insert a part. A folder ("CAD -Importe") was created. It's funny it was named "Importe" since that is german plural, while I use Onshape with the English UI. Anyway. Next session, it opens in the side bar again, and I cannot import anything. I have no clue what makes this happen. Should it run in it's own tab or not? :0/

I'm not sure if it is supposed to run in its own tab or the sidebar.

Well, I'd be happy with it running in either a tab or the side bar, if it only ran. I also noticed the app has less options than the web interface: In the web interface, I can select E.G. the level of detail of many models: Screws with/witout modelled thread, springs with/without windings, and so on. That does not even appear to be an intended functionality in the app. Also the scrollable configuration tables are not accessible in the app. That's two more reasons to skip the app and use the web site, even if that means manual down- and upload to import.

Is there an ongoing collaboration between onshape and cadenas/3Dfindit, or is this just the initial approach that's now left there as a dead end? That would be interesting tio know, since the onshape onboard standard content generator is much too limited to be actually useful over my range of applications.

I did drop them a ticket a while ago and they didn't seem too have much insight <edit>but did point to it not being their problem but that </edit> it may be an onshape side problem?

That's hard to tell from a user's point of view. Maybe the teams of Onshape and 3Dfindit sould have a talk to find out on whose side it is …
