Find Volume of Irregular Surface with Openings

I'm trying to find the volume of an irregular shape that was exported as a surface mesh from another software. I've tried to use the Enclose and Fill options to create an enclosed surface so that I can use the properties to find the volume of the object. Those do not work without an error. I cannot use the Enclose tool, because I can only select the surface, not the edge at the opening. I get the error "Selections do not enclose a region". When I use the Fill tool, I am not able to select the edge. I can select the edge at the opening when I'm not trying to use a tool.
The only way I have figured out how to solve this is by importing into a 3D printing software that repairs non-manifold edges. I'm trying to help students do this with other similar objects. However students may not have access to that 3D printing software though. Can this be done in OnShape?
