Spherical sunk

ProApeProApe Member Posts: 89

Hello, recently I successfully drew and printed a box with a lid whose hinges are spherical: one hinge has a hemisphere and the one it is connected to has a sunk in the same shape, with a 0.3mm larger diameter so that they can be moved easily and do not stick together in the printer.

Then I saw a documentary where containers were loaded on a cargo plane that run on balls sunk into the ground.

I wanted to draw and print such a system with a sunken ball, but the rotation function does not work as I imagine, but creates 2 horizontal interlocking partial ball sunks.

The spherical sunk has a horizontal diameter of 12mm and a depth of 8mm, i.e. more than half of 12, so that the sphere cannot jump out.How should I proceed?

Kind regards

Proape

To correct the doubling problem the correct Revolve axis is necessary.

I would tend to approach this assembly by creating a domed column that starts at the bottom of the cube which would allow the ball (perhaps a steel ball) to be inserted from the cube bottom followed by a compression spring and adjustment screw. Too complicated? - Scotty

Yes, I don't understand what you mean.

This should be printed in a single pass without the need for a spring
I'm not interested in alternative methods of how this could be realised, but rather how I can correctly create this sink in Onshape.

In other words, change the revolve axis to be vertical.

  • ProApeProApe Member Posts: 89

I have drawn a vertical line and now the function no longer works at all and all geometric shapes below the surface are suddenly dashed when the function is applied, i.e. auxiliary shapes, but normal in the sketch.

when you use revolve you only select entities on one side of the axis typically.

Might I suggest the learning resources? https://learn.onshape.com/

That is not possible; I can only select the hole part of circle and rotation doesn't work at all.

Indeed! I just can't select only one side..
But I don't understand why you chose New and not remove. After all, ‘material’ must be removed from the body.

I finally managed to make this hole and put the ball in.
I'm curious to see how the printer will handle it tomorrow.
Many thanks to you who helped me!

Thanks, but I've looked everywhere and haven't found anything that would have helped me. This function was only ever explained in elementary terms.
By the way, I posted a message before _anton that didn't appear here.

pick remove. that was just a screenshot to show that you can pick just half. turn off you part before picking since the part prevents you from clicking on the sketch regions. Have you explored the learn.onshape.com website yet? lots of good tutorials in there.

    Hello,

I still didn't succeed in selecting only the half.

Only after I had the idea of deleting one half in the sketch, it worked.
Yes, I visited this website and did some research on the internet, but found nothing that would have helped me in this situation.

    Thanks and

    Kind regards

Check the document in my first response to your post. Perhaps it will be an aid in demonstrating the feature as you need. - Scotty

Ok, "Select other" was the solution; I've come across it before once in a tutorial, but I don't really know when tu use it..

At all, there are so many functions that I have never come across before.
When I look at the attached screenshot, for example, I get scared!

Sometimes hiding the part will make the selection process easier (you're just seeing the sketches) Cheers

  • ProApeProApe Member Posts: 89

I did that, but I still couldn't select the part of the arc up to the connection to the vertical line; the whole arc was always selected. Which seems to be normal - even if I don't understand it because the arc is divided by the vertical line - otherwise you wouldn't need to use the Select other function.

If you have planes or other things obscuring a direct path from your eyes to what you want to select. You need to rotate the model or turn things off or do select other so there isn’t anything between your eyes and what you want to click.

You need to select the region of the sketch, not the lines (unless you want to create a surface of thing feature).

Do yourself a favor and go through the training… It will go through all the basic things like this and save you a lot of time and frustration.
