Making "Split" function skip certain features

I'm working on modeling housing for a mockup axial compressor, and I'm using the "Split" tool to turn the housing into separate upper and lower sections I can bolt together later. Some of the features of the housing get split at awkward points, and I was wondering about somehow setting up the model so that those parts stay with the upper housing.

There are two extrusions seen that are split up by the split function, and I wanted to know if it was possible to create a part where those bits could stay part of the upper part, but the rest of the split functioned as seen. I tried playing with splitting by face, but since all those geometries share a face on the back I had trouble getting that to work.

Could you can do a second split at that ledge and boolean the bits back together to make the part you want?

You can create a surface representing the split you want and use that as the split tool.
