How can I make a design to laser cut?

I have a school assignment to make a box lamp, and I kind of made my design unnecessarily complicated. I made a drawing in Adobe Illustrator using the paintbrush and exported it as a dwg file, but it won't show when I extrude, or just cut out the entire thing, when I only want the lineart to be cut out. How can I make it so (only the lineart) would be laser cut?

It sounds like you are making the process unnecessarily complicated. I'd suggest starting from scratch with Onshape, using some custom features. Check out this video:
