Newbie question about surfaces

Sorry for the newbie question. I was trying to create what seems to be a simple surface but it turned out to be more difficult than I expected. I had a sketch that had two squares. One offset inside of the other. What I wanted to do was create a surface of just the area between the two squares. I expected fill to work, but it didn't want to do it. I eventually used boundary surface, but I had to do it in 4 steps. One side of the square at a time. It seems like there has to be a better way. Any ideas would be super helpful. Thanks!
See the attached pic. I just want the area in orange to be a surface.

The sketch face is basically a surface, depending on what you want to do next, this might be enough…
You can convert your selected sketch face to an actual surface entity using the offset surface feature (with offset set to 0).
or use fill only on the outer square and split face → delete face the inner square.
