Why does OS insist referenced PS within the doc move with the assy when moving assy to another doc?

StephenGStephenG Member Posts: 383 ✭✭✭

I do not understand why, when moving an assembly to another document, OS insists all referenced tabs in the current document, MUST be included with the move.

I understand why OS would assume "as a best practice" all referenced tabs in the document, should also move with the assembly, but I should be given the option to just move the assembly without moving the referenced tabs, or better still, be given to the option to specify which tabs I want to be included with the move.

When moving a drawing tab to another document OS defaults to including all the referenced tabs, but I am given the option to move just the Drawing.

Can anyone justify this Assembly vs Drawing "Move to document…" behavior?

I find the "Move to document…" behavior to be a bit over-zealous. This is also true when moving a part studio with derived features.

Likely what you need to do first is covert all your instances in the assembly to version references rather than live workspace references. Ideally this would be a checkbox in the "Move to document…" dialogue.

If the references are not version specific it makes sense for OS to insist on moving the referenced tabs along with the tab being moved.

However, OS does not seem to care if the references are version specific; it insists on moving the referenced tabs even though it technically does not need to be done.

I noticed when moving a drawing tab to another document, that references a non-version specific tabs, OS automatically creates a version forcing all references to be version specific at that point. It has been my experience when you do something in OS that needs versioning before proceeding you get a warning/info message and are given the opportunity to cancel the operation. I find it strange that OS does this versioning behind your back.
