Reusing Drawing views across multiple drawings or Documents

Richard_InvRichard_Inv Member Posts: 24 PRO

We have a series of products in a family that all differ slightly so get their own drawings, and we want to reuse the same Detail view on each (all the brackets are the same across all products, for instance)

We need these supplementary details to remain consistent across the drawings for each product, so can't manually redo the Detail Views for each one.

We don't want to use an image, as the drawings need to export properly to DWG/DXF, and we'd rather not have to just add them in AutoCAD or something as that's not an ideal workflow. either.

Is there a way to achieve this within OnShape?

Within the same set of sheets, you could just use the "Move view to sheet … " function.

You could try to duplicate the drawing and then "update reference" (make sure to "sort by reference" first).

I suspect this question is coming from a sort of a background of autocad xrefs or linked files that most cad systems use to connect data. Theoretically the detail contains info that doesn’t parametrically updates with any part updates for whatever reason and If the detail is updated. The user wants it updated on all drawings without having to force that action via manually or inserting a new detail.

I may have read too much into the request, but it seems possible.

Correct. I don't want to have to manually recreate an annotate my detail view of the brackets on 40 drawings of 40 separate part studio/assembly models, when doing it once in a single reference drawing would suffice.

Basically, reference views from one drawing to another. Same concept as we can do with Assemblies, but with drawings.

if it’s geometry only I have a great suggestion, the addition of annotations throws it to the curb. My suggestion comes with the caveat that I've done very little with Onshape drawings at this point. But I'd suggest creating an image of your detail and inserting that to the document each drawing in onshape. You can even update the image with changes to the detail and have it populate to all the drawings you have it inserted in. You'd just have to be careful that the pixel dimensions remain the same so that you don't get some wierd scaling issues. I think this would work ok for you. but haven't tested it thoroughly. You can also insert dxf/dwg but that brings the actual entities in and doesn't allow you to "update" the detail dynamically like the image suggestion.

If you have variations of an otherwise similar product, and don't want to create a new set of drawings for each variation, have you read into configurations yet? You could make a drawing of each differently configured assembly and re-use all the sheets that have the identical subassemblies or parts used in all the variations and don't change.
