Ending a complex shape in a smooth way / end of a wingtip

Hello Onshape Users 🤗

I'm working on drawing a airplane propeller, but im feeling kindof stuck. I feel like im 85% there, but the last 15% have got me stumped!

Im not sure how to go about making the end of this wingtip a nice shape. I want it rounded off, but the methods i've tried so far has lead me here…

I'll try to explain what i've tried so far, but im not sure i'll do a great job of it.

I tried making a path from the leading edge to the trailing edge and making a lof from the top surface to that path. This worked somewhat but not when i selected the full shape.

I tried taking that same path and sweeping the leading edge to meet the trailing edge. This doesn't work either because of the size difference of the leading and trailing edge.

Any help on this would be very much appreciated.

Have a great Thursday :)

place two sketches/curves to model the shape of the tip in two directions. Use fill surface (delete the end face if your wing is solid) to fill the open end of the wing tip and add the curves/sketches as guides for the fill surface to shape it.

Agreed with above. Depending on how smooth you want it, you might even be able to pull it off with just a Fill and matching tangency (no added sketches/curves). Both Fill and Loft have lots of options for matching tangency or curvature. And guides and paths will give you added control.

also there is an example of this method in the learn.onshape.com surfacing tutorials

The end of a wingtip is always difficult, because (other than many expect) it does not only have to be beautiful, but serves a purpose, and so it's shape cannot be created by a more or less random process. One thing that helps get going is to abandon the idea that a trailing edge is sharp. It isn't. Once we get that straight, we can model a wingtip out of 3 surfaces: Upper wing surface, lower wing surface and rear wing (TE) surface. Results get less random, because now we have a way to create tangencies at all edges involved and don't end up with a zero thickness area at the far end.

    Thanks guys :)

I couldnt get the fill feature to generate anything for me though. Im getting a red vertex either on the leading or trailing edge.

Not sure how i can finish this profle. Do i need better guide lines?
