How to make a revolving joint have high resistance so that it won't move by the weight of a phone

Matthew_RoseteMatthew_Rosete Member Posts: 6 EDU

So I want to 3d print a tripod stand for my phone so I can rest it on it. I already have tight tolerances with the legs, although I am not quite sure about that, and I have made a joint for the legs to rotate. I have already seen this 3d printed and know it is a very loose fit. How would I make the rotational joint very hard to move? Also, can u check the legs as well to see if I made them tight enough to hold a phone, please?

BTW I am going to print it on a FDM printer with PLA filament and layer size of .12mm

Here is the doc:

not 3d printed thread… just a through bolt. tightening the wing nut would clamp the mount 'fingers' onto the leg at the desired position. I think tripods are pretty cheap fwiw… unless your doing it for the experience.

Here's what I was thinking to prevent things getting lose or moving. the near side hole has lil bit of plastic bulged in so that the bolt can thread into it (this is where the head of the bolt would be). the far side hole is smooth and slides over bolt as wing nut is tightened.. The radial texture on both parts leg and base prevent slippage even when wing nut is super tight.

not sure which what tolerances your trying to deal with but if its the leg pivot to the base connection… your probably better off using a fine thread through bolt and wing nut so you can adjust as needed with a bit of a texture or radial pattern on the inside of the joint to lock it in..

I am trying to not do a thread. A thread would be a nightmare to try to do because a thread would print on its side no matter which way I turn the object. Thats how I originally had it and realized that it is impossible to do that.

I'm just doing it bc I am too lazy and that prob would work I'll try it

LOL. buying is lazier than making. If I get a chance I'll mock up the texture I was picturing.

You need to increase the surface the friction works on. One tounge between two legs is not enough. Make it two or three toungues between three or four legs and you'll be much better off, by a factor od two or three, respectively, with the same abount of axial force.
