A noob has a question

The answer to my question might be very obvious but I still have a lot to learn!
I have tried a couple times to edit files that I have downloaded from elsewhere but I am not able to create a sketch on the surfaces of the file.
Is it because there are too many triangles?
This is a file that is designed for a video game called BeamNG that I am trying to modify for rc components.
The same thing has happened to me on an rc car wheel that I got from Thingi.
I am probably doing something wrong, I just don't know what.
Thanks for any help you can give!

I often create planes to sketch on, using 3 points from the mesh.
working with mesh files in onshape will require a bit of a learning curve and trial and error. depending on what you want to do it may be easier to create the parts from scratch with native onshape tools.
Thank you for your replies!
That is a good idea! I will try it!
I see, trouble is, I don't have the skills to create this from scratch!
