How to define which part retains the original part identity after a split + boolean?

Please, help make this video make sense… follow my cursor.
My two splits are using mate connectors; no combinations of flipping their primary axis or changing the order of my boolean operation yields the result I'm looking for.
I have features further in the tree that reference one part, however become null on configuration change; I understand I can configure based on the part for every-single-feature, however I want to specifically identify which parts in my part studio retain the original part's identity after splitting. I know the top-most part in a bool operation is what everything combines into.
I wish there was a more specific way to identify the 'new' part on a split.. am I misunderstanding something?
Thanks for any input.
