Creating new global variables on the fly

in Drawings
Often I see the need for a new global variable as I'm Sketching. OD allows me to define a "new variable" as I type a dimension - but this becomes a local variable - how can I get OD to put new variables in the global table ? For my needs I would want this to be the default

Easiest way is to expand the variable side panel, then you can add variables to a variable studio without exiting the sketch. You could also have another browser window/tab open showing the variable studio and add them like this.
You can do exactly like you would when creating a new local variable but then switch to the table to add it there and just cancel out of the variable dialogue like this:
