How to sketch onto curved surface that isn't a cylinder, sphere or cone?

Sorry if this is a silly question but I am new to Onshape and have recently come from Blender as I wanted to start 3d printing designs etc and found that they are two entirely different programs. I am making a soft plastic lure to fish with and intend on making a mold for it later on. The problem I have is that I want to have a scale pattern on the lure but I can't figure out how to do it?
This is the closest I have gotten. I made a sketch with a whole bunch of scales then used Projected Curve to put it onto the fish and then I was just going to use Extrude then remove and finish it off and tidy some of the scales up but the problem is none of these count as actual faces? This means I can't extrude it at all. I thought I had it figured out but now I have no idea where to go to. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am sure there is something simple I am missing but have no idea what it is. Also the scales have to be the same depth. I can't just remove from the original sketch if that is what you are thinking. Thanks!

@tyler_hennessy377 … instead of using Projected Curve try using the Wrap function… I think that'll help!
Just FYI…based on the image posted you are probably going to have a hard time with the Extrudes you want. The scale sketches are all overlapping which will cause issues with intersecting geometry with the Extrude.
Lastly, post a link to your document…that'll help other troubleshoot with you.
