Problem on playing with the tools and constraints

kevin_chen811kevin_chen811 Member Posts: 2

I am trying to wrap my head around before teaching my secondary engineering students to use Oneshape as their sole modeling software due to its "easy to start with" reputation. I am having issues with the tools and constraints when I am going through your intro courses.

For example, when I try to make one line parallel with another one I found that only works when the line on the right side be made parallel with the one on its left. I cannot do the other way. Similar things happen on concentrical circles and tangent, same size etc. I am wondering why the order of operations (click choose) can not make the difference?

Also I found handling constraints could be daunting even for an engineering trained adult, and I frequently get the error message on can't solved constraints in red which is frustrating. Is there way to add or remove constraints?

Also I am wondering if Onshape has a teaching plan (structured tasks, worksheets), for high school students which allow students to submit or test their work and got feedback? That will be great if we have such resource.

If you are getting constraints in red you have over defined the sketch. Constraints can be added from the tool bar in sketch mode and can be removed by hovering over a part of your sketch and then selecting clicking on the constraint you want to delete and press the delete key on your keyboard.

I've not encountered the problems you describe with left/ right order for parellel constraints. Sounds odd.

One thing that is a little different about Onshape is that you can select multiple elements (e.g., sketch lines) by clicking them sequentially. No need to hold down shift or ctrl or something. So, to make elements concentric or parallel or equal, I usually single click everything I want to add a constrain to, then click the constraint. You'll see a small number next to your mouse as you select multiple elements. Spacebar to deselect all.

As for curriculum, I'd check out CAD Challenges in the App Store and Intro to CAD in the Learning Center.
