Scale an imported image

dan_beaversdan_beavers Member Posts: 14 EDU

I want to import an image into a sketch and then scale it to match a dimension. The only scaling that I am able to di is the initial placement. I can move and rotate it, but not scale it. How do I do it?

The first dimension you give to an image determines the scale. For example, if you import an image of a die (game piece) that is shown sitting on one face, use the line tool to 'trace' a vertical edge from one corner to it's opposite corner. Dimension that line to 1 ". The die image will be scaled to be 1" tall. - Scotty

I understand that initial scaling. I want to scale it subsequently. This is needed because I import a picture of an item that has margins. The margins cause the problem. I can crop the image,, but that is not the optimum method. Apparently this is then a feature request.

@dan_beavers keep your imported images in their own sketch with a single dimension for scaling purposes. do your sketching in a separate subsequent sketch..

@MDesign I don't understand your suggestion. What I think I understand doesn't seem to address the issue with margins in an image.

I don't know what you're trying to do regarding margins. I just know that it tends to work better all around when you create 2 sketch features. One for the image and one for the actual lines and stuff using. Makes it easier to sketch over the image when it's halftone as well.

@MDesign The objective is to take a photograph of an object and then scale it accurately AFTER importing it. The picture has margins that are not related to the size of the object. (I understand the advantage for a "halftone" image.) I am ok with keeping the aspect ratio unchanged.

ok. then the only thing preventing you from rescaling the photo a 2nd time is if you've added additional constraints or dimensions that override that dimension. you used originally.

You can scale with other entities in the same sketch as the image, you just can't have more than one dimension and no constraints restricting that scale operation. This link will show an example of that.

    Thanks. That works!
