What is the correct way to make an open box with known internal measurements?

This is a "looking for the best practice" or "looking for the right trick" or "looking for the right tool" kind of question. This is a very simple question.

I need to draw an open box (so 5 faces). It is 10x10x10 on the inside, with a 2 wall thickness

I have several solutions, none is "native":

  • square 10+4 → extrude 10 → shell
  • square 10→ offset 2→ extrude the shell→ sketch on th ebottom→ extrude 2
  • square 10+4→ extrude 10→ sketch of a 10x10 square on a face→ extrude with "Remove"

There are probably many other ideas, more or less sophisticated. None of them is straightforward, though.

Is there a "correct" way to make a box, with the right tool? I was very close with the shell one, except that you cannot "shell out", that is to add material around the selected face, at the same time removing the face

    Not sure thee's a "correct" way, but what about:

    square 10→ extrude thin with a tickness of 2 to the outside and a depth of 10→ extrude the bottom down 2

    You're missing a trick. If you flip the shell direction it will add the wall thickness to the outside of the initial solid. Model a solid at 10x10x10. Add any rounds next for a consistent wall thickness. Shell it, removing the top, and flipping the arrow direction. Done. Internal box dims stay at 10x10x10.

    That's a good trick, not sure I ever actually used the "flip" option in the shell!
