Border & geometry not appearing in new drawing

I create a new drawing in my document and select an existing, standard Onshape border, say ANSI C with inch dimensions. "Loading drawing" wheel spins for a few seconds. When it's done, there's no border on the screen.
However the Insert Part dialog box pops up. I select a part with the desired view orientation and scale. Click to place new view on the screen… no geometry appears.
Sheet properties for this totally blank drawing show Custom format, size A.
What procedure or setting am I missing to make this work?
