CAM For routing

eric_schimelpfenigeric_schimelpfenig Member Posts: 85 EDU

Hey folks, I've been working on an Onshape CAM tool that's geared towards woodworking and routing.

It excels at doing sheet good in particular. It's got built in nesting, automatic feeds and speeds calculation, automatic toolpathing. It's also go some clever toolpath options that are great on routers like helix entries for deep pockets, drilling support, boring support and adaptive clearing. This is a lot of the good toolpath types you get in milling software but optimized for routing.

This is a very early demo: https://photos.app.goo.gl/uPo7n4RxWpquJ7zD9

This has been in design and development internally. Curious to see if there's interest here. The app is not ready for public consumption, but I am looking for a couple of early alpha testers.

If you're someone who's doing cabinetry or furniture, has a G code based router and has a willingness to give early feedback I'd like to talk.

This looks really great. I can't help you on the testing, but I can validate that this is something worth working on. We get a decent number of requests for integrations into CAM software like mastercam and others, but cloud to desktop isn't ideal - and building new CAM software isn't trivial.

    Thank you!

I know… this isn't my first time trying this :)

If you know of anyone who wants to test send them my way!

@eric_schimelpfenig looks like you've already tackled some of the asks I posted about in my improvement requests thread about things I'd like to see in Onshape's CAM studio eventually. You can tell by the example nest in that thread that automation is absolutely critical to our production practices and product and is the first metric we evaluate our CAM options by above all else. Our new router runs on a .cix format instead of g code but I could probably put this software through its paces on the older Multicam routers in the shop on weekends and try it out on my weirdo spline parts.

@eric_schimelpfenig Hey! long time no see. Yes, interested.
I have a WorkBee 1500 x 1500 we could test it on. Was in the market for some intuitive CAM software for woodworking / sheet goods.
There is a project I have in mind lined up and ready to go for this.

Hey @Derek_Van_Allen_BD we don't do .CIX (yet) and honestly probably won't for a while. MultiCAM support would be reasonable to do… that's just a post processor away from working. Do you have any models of stuff you'd like to make you would be interested in sharing, we can do that privately if you would like.

Also, it looks like I nailed most of your list :) Including automatic feeds and speeds recognition and feature recognition!

@michael does your Workbee do GRBL?
