Making a smooth shaped vesel

joe_clark779joe_clark779 Member Posts: 5
Hi Folks,

I am trying to draw up an intake Plenum for a car, with a view to getting it printed in nylon for testing,

the problem i am having is getting a chamber with nice contours, i have got as far as in the at the bottom, but can't fillet the joins to get a smooth transition, or get the loft or sweep to produce anything meaningful. idealy i would like to ad a tapered inlet that joins to the main chamber with a long slot as per the below link..

any suggestions on how to approach this?

    Hi Joe,

I like the progress you have made so far. I am an Audi/VW guy myself! I do have a few suggestions:

    1. You can import your image right into Onshape and see the image in another tab in your document or even add it in as a sketch image in a sketch to quickly reference!
    2. I think to solve the issue you are asking you should use the Boolean feature. This feature you can combine two bodies, subtract the difference or keep the difference
    3. I would suggest looking into using more of the Loft, Sweep and Replace face features. Loft is a great way to quickly close gaps by selecting two faces. Sweep takes some more set up with guide lines and sketches, but can yield great results if used correctly. And Replace face is one of Onshape's very powerful direct editing features which can be very useful for creating those complex geometries very quickly. I suggest you watch the direct editing video (reference below).

Good luck and let me know how it goes!

    Thanks Jason,

I have been through a few redesigns now and got somthing that is pretty workable!

I ended up lofting 1 quarter of the "front" and mirroring it... however i do end up with a slight "ridge" most noticabble on the horizontal plane, I'm wondering if I can smooth this off somehow, i can seem to see anything that would blend faces together apart from fillet which isnt applicable here.
